Take Everywhere Crochet

This post will probably make me sound crazy but I figured I’d share anyway :)
I’m the kind of person who tries to be prepared for anything. This is a trait I think I picked up from my mom… I like to keep in my purse anything I (or my husband) might need on a daily basis. I don’t like to carry a huge purse though, so I try to keep it to the absolute necessities. Currently I have an umbrella, lotion, lip balm, a notebook, pens, ibuprofen and antacids, granola bars, tissues, spare contacts, eye drops, gum, a compact, nail file, tweezers, hair-ties, etc. etc. etc.

… but what I mean to mention here are the crocheted things that I keep with me at all times. First of all, I’m one of those people who keeps a purse inside my purse. For organization purposes as well as for versatility. If I don’t want to lug my big purse around somewhere I can just pull out the inner purse that is filled with my essential things: IDs, credit cards, check book, etc. That inner purse is my spiral crochet bag:

In addition to that, I also keep in my purse a crocheted coffee sleeve (because those paper sleeves just really don’t do much) and a crocheted headband (to keep my hair out of my face when driving with the windows down for example.)

What do you keep in your purse? Are you as crazy as I am?

Moving and Summer Crochet Projects

We’re moving! The husband and I bought a house and we are moving into it this weekend. Therefore, I’ve been spending most of my spare time this week packing. I came across my crochet FO stash and briefly reflected on past projects. It can be hard to want to crochet when it starts getting hot outside (and it has been unseasonably hot this past week!) In the summer I like to crochet with thin, light cotton blend yarns and make practical summer things like market bags, head bands, light scarves, halter/tank tops, purses and cozies, etc.

One of my favorite summer crocheted items is one that I found hanging in a closet yesterday. The Cocoon Bag (designed by Cecily Keim) from the book “Crochet Me: Designs to Fuel the Crochet Revolution”. It is a pretty floral mesh market bag made with thin yarn designed to be a long narrow bag. When I made it I decided to turn it sideways and turn it into a wide but shallow bag.

Also, it’s about time I decided what my June CAL project will be. June is going to be very busy what with moving and being in a friend’s wedding amongst other things. I have a feeling that June is also going to be quite warm. I’ve decided on a quick and functional project: the Nadie headband (find the FREE pattern here, in both UK and US terms). I haven’t decided on yarn yet… I’ll have to dig through my stash :)

So tell me, what are your favorite summer yarn projects?

Rasberry Jelly Mini Bag: Finished

…And it’s really cute. The Jelly yarn is a bit strange to work with. When you’re done it wants to buckle a bit and you can’t very well “block” vinyl. So here it is, hanging up with a couple books in it to hold the shape. I left it like this overnight and it’s now keeping it’s shape pretty well. I took it with me to bar trivia this week… it’s perfect for the bar, holds my wallet and phone and doesn’t absorb the nasty smokey bar smell. It’s not great for keys though, those had to stay in my pocket.

Remember, you can still buy the pattern for this bag and the larger version for only $3.99 for the rest of the month of May!
