Take Everywhere Crochet

This post will probably make me sound crazy but I figured I’d share anyway :)
I’m the kind of person who tries to be prepared for anything. This is a trait I think I picked up from my mom… I like to keep in my purse anything I (or my husband) might need on a daily basis. I don’t like to carry a huge purse though, so I try to keep it to the absolute necessities. Currently I have an umbrella, lotion, lip balm, a notebook, pens, ibuprofen and antacids, granola bars, tissues, spare contacts, eye drops, gum, a compact, nail file, tweezers, hair-ties, etc. etc. etc.

… but what I mean to mention here are the crocheted things that I keep with me at all times. First of all, I’m one of those people who keeps a purse inside my purse. For organization purposes as well as for versatility. If I don’t want to lug my big purse around somewhere I can just pull out the inner purse that is filled with my essential things: IDs, credit cards, check book, etc. That inner purse is my spiral crochet bag:

In addition to that, I also keep in my purse a crocheted coffee sleeve (because those paper sleeves just really don’t do much) and a crocheted headband (to keep my hair out of my face when driving with the windows down for example.)

What do you keep in your purse? Are you as crazy as I am?

Knit & Crochet Blog Week: Day 1

knit and crochet blog week

How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? Was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda?

My Grandma, Mom and many Aunts were crocheters (and knitters and quilters, etc.) but I think mostly just made afghans and scarves.  They did not teach me to crochet but they were my inspiration.  I started crocheting in the Fall of 2005.  I had always wanted to learn but never took the time to do so until then.  I had just finished grad school and was waiting for someone to hire me and needed something to fill my time.    One day I went out and picked up couple cheap skeins of yarn, a six-pack of plastic hooks and a booklet with 20 different stitch patterns.  I taught myself to crochet using that booklet along with videos and photos on the internet.  Crocheting has been one of the most rewarding activities I’ve ever participated in.  It came very naturally to me from the beginning… knitting and sewing never did but someday I’ll learn :)

Climbing Shells Mini and Market Bags

Finally, I finished up this pattern… actually it’s two patterns!  They are both detailed mesh rectangular base bags that you can make with nearly any worsted weight yarn.  The first (which I made from wool) is a 12″ X 12″ market bag that stretches like crazy to fit your books, beach towels or farmer’s market finds.  The second is a little 7″ X 8″ pouch that can carry your wallet, camera, phone, etc.  Both can be altered in length easily to suit your needs.  Once again you can find it on Ravelry or buy it here.
